JENNER (Serbia) "To Live Is To Suffer" CD - Review - Infernö Records 2017
Well.. this album ain't new.. but who cares ? I'd like to get back on this album as it is for me an essential piece from the underground scene ! First, the band is coming from a country - SERBIA - that is not that known for its metal scene (even if there's a REAL scene there, full of great bands, it stays rather confidential - bigger medias prefer talking about swedish/american/german ones.. what a pity !!!).. Second.. this band is composed of four girls.. that once again prove GIRLS can play METAL and i'd even say PLAY IT WITH CLASS !
"To Live Is To Suffer" was released in 2017 on INFERNÖ Records (Yes, MY label ! So what ? Why shouldn't I review ALBUMS that are on my label since they're albums i simply LOVE ?) and is made of just 8 songs.. Only 8 ? Yes, but the right 8 ! I mean the 8 that will leave you NAILED after you listened to them.. 8 that are in a technical speed/thrash metal vein.. if you ask me, i'd say the style is somewhere between bands like Heathen, Flotsam & Jetsam, Anthrax, Abattoir, Agent Steel, Megadeth.. Yes that US speed-thrash metal style made with class & melodies ! The guitar work is simply impressive and you can feel Alex has worked ALOT to reach her level.. solos are absolutely brilliant and far from a simple avalanche of notes, like it is way too often the case with Thrash bands .. Rhythmically talking.. it hurts like a JACKHAMMER (Get your ears on "Demon's Call" - you'll be blasted !) and it lets you NO time to breath ! Vocally .. yes that's one of the most interesting points here too ! Andelina knows how to sing.. it's well-balanced between melody & aggressiveness.. but she clearly avoids growling/screaming like many do as soon as we talk "Speed/Thrash Metal" ... and that gives JENNER a real musical identity !!!
Speed-Thrash Metal, YES but that's not FAST or FASTER from the beginning to the end.. each song have this "something" that makes them catchy/interesting to listen to.. They know how to slow down when it's needed, they know how to use the right tempo-change when it's needed !
This album is brilliant, this album is RICH in terms of musical creation and it'd be a shame to keep on ignoring it longer !
Fabien, born 1969, grew up with the NWOBHM sounds, musically educated with cult french magazines that were ENFER and METAL ATTACK, definitely nailed to the style when "The Number Of The Beast" was released... From 1982, it was clear life would never be the same ! Young & getting wild to the sounds of SAXON, TRUST, ROCK GODDESS, VENOM, BLACK SABBATH, DIO, MOTORHEAD, AC/DC... the passion grew up as years went by ... Discovering later the new styles that are Speed/Thrash Metal, Death-Metal, Black-Metal, the fate was SEALED.. Born to Raise Hell, Rock Hard & Live his life according to the METAL rules!!!
